Molasses Key Anchorage

Molasses Key is a small island, or key, located in the lower Florida Keys. The island is private property, as of my last knowledge cutoff in September 2021, and therefore access may be restricted. However, the waters surrounding the island can be used for anchoring, subject to local regulations and weather conditions. Here's a description of Molasses Key Anchorage and the surrounding area:

Location: Molasses Key is located about 9 miles (14 km) west of Marathon, Florida, and approximately 37 miles (60 km) northeast of Key West, Florida. It's in the Atlantic Ocean, south of the Overseas Highway (U.S. Route 1), which links the Florida Keys to the mainland.

Weather: The weather around Molasses Key is typically tropical, with warm temperatures throughout the year, interspersed with rain showers, particularly in the summer months. The area can be prone to hurricanes from June through November, so it's essential to keep an eye on weather forecasts.

Features: Molasses Key is a small, lush island that provides a natural windbreak, depending on the wind direction. The waters around the island are turquoise and clear, excellent for swimming, snorkeling, and fishing. However, boaters should be aware that coral formations are present, so care should be taken when navigating and anchoring to avoid damaging the coral or grounding the boat.

Attractions: While landing on Molasses Key itself may not be possible due to its private ownership status, the surrounding waters offer plenty of opportunities for water-based activities. The clear waters are home to a variety of fish species and coral, making them perfect for snorkeling and diving.

Sombrero Reef, located a few miles east of Molasses Key, is part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and is known for its stunning coral formations and abundant marine life. It's a popular spot for snorkeling and diving.

Marathon, the closest city to Molasses Key, offers amenities such as marinas, restaurants, grocery stores, and shopping. Marathon is also known for the Turtle Hospital, a facility dedicated to the rehabilitation of injured sea turtles, and the Dolphin Research Center, where visitors can learn about and interact with dolphins.

Key West, a bit further away, is famous for its historic sites, nightlife, and cultural attractions, such as the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, Southernmost Point, and Mallory Square.
