To operate safely after dark, you must be able to recognize light
configurations on any type of vessel you encounter in local waters.
• For nighttime navigation or when there is poor visibility, the boat
lights must be on whether the boat is underway or at anchor. The reason
for the vessel’s lights are to alert other boats of your presence, to
tell other boats something about your size and to enable you to properly
apply the navigational rules. The reasoning behind navigational lights
on boats is the same reason lights on cars must be turned on during rain
or when the visibility is poor.
